Vladimir Kolesnikov's Scream connects popular symbols of different eras. The central figure of Edvard Munch’s famous 1893 creation is replaced with the main character of the 1990 comedy Home Alone. It may appear first that Kolesnikov’s Scream compares the high and low culture... But which of the two images is more renowned — Munch’s alarming omen of disaster now found on almost any souvenir, from mugs to bed sheets, or an after-shave reaction performed by a young Macaulay Culkin that’s spawned imitation to this day? In his paradoxical comparison of the two images, Kolesnikov manages to tip his hat to the essence of postmodernism, where the difference between low and high culture is erased.
