Depiction of a skull is a traditional symbol: it implies both evanescence of life and a warning, as well as vitality encased in the head. The following explanation given by medieval alchemists is, in our opinion, to the fullest extent applicable to this piece of art: skull is like a slag, a useless residue of magic ingredients fermented in a retort which were imbued with “demonic” essence while they were still living.
