Edgard Barbosa is a Brazilian-born artist and designer based in New York City. He graduated with a BA in Graphic Design from Florida Atlantic University in 2014 and is currently an art director in the Google DS team at George P. Johnson. Born in Petropolis, Brazil, Edgard grew up influenced by his hometown's architectural history and cultural scene. From public schools designed by Oscar Niemeyer to graffitied skateparks, Edgard grew up with an early understanding of high and low art co-existing. IN 2004, Edgard and his family immigrated to the suburbs of South Florida. Unable to speak English fluently, Edgard gravitated to the visual arts and skateboarding to communicate in school. Edgard helped his family’s business of cleaning homes for most of his teen years, where he would collect discarded books and magazines. From these, Edgard would eventually develop his technique of folding magazine pages that would abstract its imagery. In his immigrant experience, Edgard learned to understand the world from an observer's perspective while awaiting to be a participant. Edgard immediately uses the cultural tools available around him (magazines, memes, videos, flyers) and his ambition is to develop a new language and understanding of popular culture. His work has also been included in various group shows in New York City, Florida, and Washington state
